Abortion

Radio Airdate: August 2004

Good morning – Today I am going to talk a little bit about abortion. I am not going to talk about fetus’s and embryo’s – I am going to talk about unborn children.

We are made by God - The Bible says we are valuable , wondrously made. We are a work of god. Consider Psalm 139 13:16

(Psa 139:13) For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.

(Psa 139:14) I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

(Psa 139:15) My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

(Psa 139:16) Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

He created us in such a wondrous way, seeing us before we’re even born, written in His book just how we were fashioned, before we were fashioned! We are formed by God (not parents) in the womb. Mothers are not just pregnant, but "with child”. Twenty five times the Bible uses the phrase “with child” – not a fetus, a child.

In the old Testament, harm to an unborn child was covered.

(Exo 21:22) If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

(Exo 21:23) And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life,

Note the punishment in Exodus if a woman is hurt that is with child.

Let’s read about another prophet who was born because of a prayer of a woman desiring a child.

(1Sa 1:10) And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.

(1Sa 1:11) And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

(1Sa 1:12) And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.

(1Sa 1:13) Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.

(1Sa 1:14) And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.

(1Sa 1:15) And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

(1Sa 1:16) Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.

(1Sa 1:17) Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

(1Sa 1:18) And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.

(1Sa 1:19) And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

((( Note that the Lord remembered her after her husband knew her))) the Lord caused the conception – He can close the womb or open the womb and He does both.

(1Sa 1:20) Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.

(1Sa 1:21) And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.

(1Sa 1:22) But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.

(1Sa 1:23) And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.

(1Sa 1:24) And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young.

(1Sa 1:25) And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.

(1Sa 1:26) And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.

(1Sa 1:27) For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:

(1Sa 1:28) Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.

Let’s read from Matthew 1:18 about Jesus.

(Mat 1:18) Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

(Mat 1:19) Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.

(Mat 1:20) But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

(Mat 1:21) And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Jesus became Son of God at conception, not birth. Jesus did not become Jesus the moment he was born, He was Jesus while in the womb, wasn’t He?

And let’s read about John – filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

(Luk 1:15) For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

(Luk 1:16) And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

(Luk 1:17) And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

And let’s read a bit about both Jesus’s mother and John’s mother meeting before either was actually born of them.

(Luk 1:26) And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

(Luk 1:27) To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

(Luk 1:28) And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

(Luk 1:29) And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

(Luk 1:30) And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

(Luk 1:31) And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

(Luk 1:32) He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

(Luk 1:33) And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

(Luk 1:34) Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

(Luk 1:35) And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

(Luk 1:36) And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

(Luk 1:37) For with God nothing shall be impossible.

(Luk 1:38) And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

(Luk 1:39) And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

(Luk 1:40) And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

(Luk 1:41) And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

(Luk 1:42) And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

(Luk 1:43) And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

(Luk 1:44) For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

Wow - the babe leaped in her womb for joy. A fetus? Or an unborn Child? The answer is obvious. A fetus is an unborn child, not just an organic growth like a tumor, but an unborn child.

Luke 2:21 notes that Jesus was named before he was conceived in the womb.

(Luk 2:21) And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Satan does his best to destroy or pervert what is Godly. Look at what he has done in America concerning marriage. Satan would pervert that holy union, destroy it outright if he could. How the devil must laugh and rejoice over our National stance on abortion. Utter destruction of innocent life. By the mother! Literally the opposite of all God is. He, through the grace provided by Jesus Christ’s life and death” gives us life when we are guilty. Abortion kills the innocent. Abortion is a great abomination, a terrible sacrilege, a mockery of the value of life. Some abortions are performed by actually inducing the birth of the child before killing it. May the Lord have mercy on our souls!

Note what God says to Jeremiah.

(Jer 1:5) Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Note – God says “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee. God forms us in the belly – He knows us before that. It is inconceivable to me that a Christian could even attempt to justify abortion as being ok, a personal right. A right to choose. Well, I guess it’s true that we do have a right to choose. We can choose good or we can choose evil. As a nation, in our courts, we have began to choose evil, we have began a process of rejecting God. The fact that abortion is legal and allowed is one of the greatest victories of Satan in this century. I wonder how long it will be before we begin to kill our elderly, our weak, our sickly? Assisted Suicides – oh wait, that’s already going on. I wonder if someday it will be legal to kill unwanted children that have already been born? Perhaps 1-2 months old – after all, they couldn’t survive on their own either, without someone to care for them. I wonder how bad it will have to be before we overcome our lukewarm attitudes enough to do something about it. And in this country we actually have a peaceful means to overcome this evil, we can pray (at least in private, perhaps not on public property, but that’s another sermon), and we can vote. Many Christians don’t even care enough about it to even vote. And so, by our silence, we condone, we allow it. May God forgive us. Forgive us for our laziness, our fear – Oh Lord forgive us our apathy. Give us courage, give us strength to speak out – to act.

Perhaps a listener today has had an abortion. Perhaps a listener today is overwhelmed with the guilt and horror of what they have done at an earlier age. If you have turned to Jesus – then know that you are forgiven. You cannot change what has been done, like all sins we can’t just take them back. But we can be forgiven. This is not a message to condemn you, your heart has already condemned you. If you are listening today and have not turned to God – you know your heart is leading you to Him. Or else you wouldn’t be listening today. Your heart, the Word is convicting you. You can let it all the guilt go, you can know you have been forgiven – If you repent (and you feel the repentance in your heart, don’t you?) and if you call out to God. God loves you and doesn’t want you to perish, He wants to forgive you or He wouldn’t be calling you right now. God loves us, He sent His Son to die for us that we might be forgiven. Reach out to Him and find peace from the torments of your own guilty conscience. We have all sinned, all of us. We are all guilty, all of us. But God is merciful and will forgive. His Son has already paid our price.

And He loves each and every one of us – expressed perfectly in John 3:16-17. I will close with these verses of encouragement.

(Joh 3:16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

(Joh 3:17) For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Amen.
